Ruapuna arable farmer Stephen King is keen to discover the results of a biostimulant which could potentially enable faster and better growth for his crops.
Agriganics manager Bruce Hore introduced New Zealand to the biostimulant BioPlus which makes fertilizers more efficient by promoting the beneficial activity of microorganisms in soil and increasing plant growth through quicker germination and greater root growth.
The biostimulant effectively makes the most of the microorganisms in soil, which would otherwise remain dormant reducing the potential of plant growth.
Mr Hore said the biostimulant could potentially grow plants a week or two ahead of conventionally grown crops.
“The BioPlus System is a liquid complex of enzymes, vitamins, hormones and other essential biological factors. When applied to the soil, this mix of bio-catalysts stimulates microorganism activity.”
Mr Hore said the biostimulant saved on crop inputs but lifted yields by loading crops with more nutrients giving crops like grain a better yield.
“The biostimulant increases protein and nutrients in the plant, it’s another tool farmers can use to improve their yields and quality.” Mr Hore said.
He said the BioPlus was compatible with most herbicides and fungicides and only needed to be applied to crop paddocks every six months.
Although Mr King sowed his autumn wheat crop in April he is already impressed with what he has seen from his crop so far in using the BioPlus, but said the jury will be out until harvest time in late January next year, when the true potential of the biostimulus will be evident.
Mr Hore said the United States has been using biostimulants since the 1970’s and saw potential in the product which he is trialing on eight farms throughout New Zealand.
Mr Hore has developed a strong business relationship with World Renowned soil consultant Neal Kinsey from the United States who is a firm advocate in agristimulants.
“The farmers that split their fields, then come in and harvest – they will tell you there is more biomass and/or a difference in yield where they used a biostimulant.
“Farmers note more ‘spring’ underfoot in the treated soil,” Mr Kinsey said.

How does this stimulant work in conjunction with hulled grains like Barley and Einkorn?
Hi Stan
The BioPlus will make your grains more nutrient dense. It does this by feeding the biology which makes the population increase, therefore the biology make the nutrients in the soil more available to the plant .
